Last week, again we saw the fish mostly taking dry flies off the top and mayfly continued to hatch around the lake. The trout were well spread out and a good number were caught not far out at all. The boats and float tubes also did well with quite a few trout coming out with snakes or pulling a booby along the surface. Mayfly patterns, daddies, hoppers and emergers all doing well again and the fish seemed especially drawn to orange and brown for a good part of the week. Cats whiskers worked well as did buzzers and nymphs but most anglers were more than happy to cast out a dry and wait for the fish to take it off the top, even if it did mean that they caught one for every ten that they missed. It was another great week to be out there chucking the fluff and everyone left the lake with happy faces.
Last year we trialled an any method week at Blackdyke where anglers of all types could test their skill at the lake. It worked well and was a good way to see our season out. This year we are going to have any method for the whole of June as it worked so well so if any fly anglers have any coarse angling friends please let them know. Pictures are of Phil Root who was one of the anglers who had a lesson over the weekend and spent a couple days fishing with friends. more pics on facebook.
